Travel To El Salvador: From The Unsafest Country In The World, To The Safest In Latin America

El Salvador was considered the most insecure country in the world in 2015, with a homicide rate of 103 per 100,000 inhabitants. The widespread violence in the country was attributed to criminal groups, such as the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 gangs, who fought to control more territories and resources.

In recent years, El Salvador has made significant progress in reducing crime. In May 2023, the country celebrated 365 days without murders, a historical period in the country, considered a historical mark in the fight against violence.

With the government of Nayib Bukele, the country since 2019, has had a strong investment in public safety and law enforcement, approval of measures to combat corruption and increase criminal judicial efficiency, the creation of a new police unit specialised in criminal investigations and the implementation of new surveillance technologies, such as security cameras and drones, created programs for the prevention of violence and rehabilitation of criminals, such as the "Solidarity Communities", the government took action to reduce poverty and social inequality, there was an increase in employment and economic opportunities and strong cooperation between communities and law enforcement.

El Salvador is a country with a rich culture, delicious food, lush landscapes and incredible beaches, such as Los Volcanos National Park, the beaches of El Tunco, La Libertad and El Zonte, the Rota da Flores and the capital San Salvador. Those who visit the country cannot miss the unique gastronomy, such as pupusas (pancakes stuffed with cheese and other ingredients), ceviche (a dish with seafood) and horchata (a sweet drink made of rice and cinnamon).
