The Qatar World Cup is the most expensive in FIFA history. Qatar's finance minister said in 2017 that the country was spending $500 million a week on various projects: roads, hotels, stadiums and airport improvement.
It is estimated that Qatar has spent 220 billion dollars since it was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup at the end of 2010. This amount is fifteen times higher than what Russia spent for the 2018 World Cup.
Former FIFA President Joseph Blatter said it was a "bad choice" for Qatar to host the World Cup. This choice led to a worldwide investigation for allegations of corruption in the world body that protects football that led to the resignation of Joseph Blatter.
