UEFA President opens doors to the arrival of the Champions League in the USA

The future of Europe's main club football competition may soon be played outside Europe for the first time in its history.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin left the door open for Champions League matches to be played in the US.

The final of the competition this year will be played in Istanbul, Turkey. In 2024 in London, United Kingdom, and in 2025 in Munich, Germany. No place has yet been chosen for the great final of 2026, although the US has already bought the rights to the competition until the 2029/2030 season.

The UEFA president, in an interview with 'Men in Blazers', said that the US markets are still to be explored.

"It's possible. We started discussing it, but then a year is the World Cup, 2024 is Euro," Ceferin said.

"This year [the final] is Istanbul, '24 in London, '25 in Munich. And after that, let's see. It's possible, it's possible."

The US public shows great interest in European football competitions. "Americans are willing to pay this amount [gestures] for the best and nothing at least. So they will follow European football while basketball lovers in Europe follow the NBA," Ceferin said.

"It is a very important promising market for the future. The problem is that we are selling rights very well. The sponsorship is so much for now from the US, but here the commercialisation is completely different than in Europe. They are much more talented for this than we are," he said.

"What really shocked me is that our Euro finals [2020], European national team finals, were watched by more people in the United States than in the NBA finals. What shocked me is that 30 Euro matches, each match audience was a Super Bowl audience. So I think we're doing well," he concluded.
