Russell Crowe Reflects on His Weight Struggles and Changing Self-Image
Russell Crowe, who rose to fame as a Hollywood sex symbol with his lean and muscular physique in Gladiator (2000), has recently shared his personal struggles with body image and the challenges of maintaining his weight. In an interview, Crowe revealed that he now feels “enojado” (disgusted) when he looks in the mirror, a stark contrast to the admiration he once received for his physical appearance. Over the years, the actor has undergone significant body transformations for roles in films like The Insider (1999), Cinderella Man (2005), and The Loudest Voice (2019), which required him to gain and lose large amounts of weight.
Crowe admitted that while gaining weight for roles was often easy and sometimes enjoyable, losing it was a much harder process, especially as he aged. He confessed that his metabolism is no longer as efficient, making it nearly impossible to return to his former shape. His lifestyle choices, including a sedentary routine, smoking, and a fondness for processed foods, have further complicated his ability to shed weight. Crowe also attributed some of his challenges to struggles with anxiety and depression, which have contributed to overeating at times.
Despite loving his craft, Crowe expressed frustration over the public and media focus on his weight rather than his performances. For example, when he gained a significant amount of weight to portray Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice, much of the conversation centered on his physical transformation rather than his portrayal of the role. The actor revealed that these comments have made his journey with weight a “constant battle”.
Crowe’s candid reflections offer a glimpse into the pressures actors face, not only in delivering powerful performances but also in meeting unrealistic expectations about their physical appearance throughout their careers.
